any vehicle you use needs to have strong chicken wire or chain link over ALL glass windows and lights at the VERY least, and should be a 4x4 SUV. a plow or fabricated ram is next, one on the rear is a good idea too. then look to run-flat tires, and replacing glass with plexiglass so it cant be shattered through the chicken wire. a snorkle and an enclosed gun turret out of the sunroof would be next.

Don't forget to modify the exhaust pipes to be famethrowers (anyone ever see those on hot rods? Don't think they won't be effective, especially if you've got side exit exhaust pipes!!!!). An extra fuel line with a selenoid and a spark plug is all you need. I think there are kits out there.

I would suggest using a standard f150 or chevy 1500 -2500HD style truck,, Crew cabs at best, they are bigger trucks, can handle a load, And most are 4x4.. Hopefully when i buy mine ill be adding a grill guard to mine, And if i play my cards right, Ill find one with the plow setup so i could allways add one Big Grin but for under 40grand you cant go wrong.. Think practical when buying a vehical, as it might be what saves your life...

Well, I already have a Tundra with the TRD off road package. That goes pretty much anywhere I want it to...although I never put on a grill guard....which will need to happen one of these days....

As for the half-track in the link above, just a cool vehicle...total restored, and comes with the 50 cal.....

My first choice would be an AAVP7A1 with a Mk19 and M2 mounted side by side in the turret. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/aavp7a1-pics.htm
Preferebly with a dirt bike or two in the back as well as plenty of ammo for all weapons. I can teach anyone to drive and I would man the weapon station. (I haven't done it in a few years but I was pretty freakin awesome on that weapon station at one time)

Has a max land speed fully loaded of 40mph on land (25-30 average) and has true amphibeous capability. It is slow in the water but presents a very low profile. The armor would be able to keep the zeds out and nothing would survive gettting run over by 26+ tons of tracked vehicle.

I thought about an M1 Tank but there isn't enough room to carry everything.

More realistic choice for the initial days of SHTF would be a plain old K5 Blazer or full size Bronco. Should have a fairly hefty push bar on the front but the bumpers would work well as long as there isn't much ramming going on.
