I wouldn't count out the Piper's or Cessna's either.
I am a private pilot, with about 22hours, mostly in my fav. trainer, The '78 Piper Tomahawk (nicknamed the "Traumahawk" by the instructors)

I excelled in the challenges of short/soft field takeoffs and landings, often landing in the grass strip next to my local airfield instead of on the runway, just for practice.

I agree that an aluminum-tube-and-nylon ultralight would have a much smaller runway requirement, but we are talking about Pennsylvania here, right? Not exactly a shortage of fields or open spaces in this state we live in.
