Pa. Attorney General Henry launches Allegheny County Gun Violence Task Force

Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry said her office is forming an Allegheny County gun violence task force. On Thursday, she came to the Allegheny County Courthouse to announce the task force in a joint appearance with District Attorney Steve Zappala.

"To combat gun trafficking, gun violence in this part of the commonwealth. And this task force is going to be an expansion of the work that has already been ongoing. It's going to multiply the impact that we are able to have when it comes to investigating and prosecuting gun-related crimes," Henry said.
Pittsburgh's police chief, Allegheny County's police superintendent, and officials from state police, the ATF and the U.S. Attorney's Office were among those in law enforcement who attended the announcement.
The attorney general's office will spend $1.5 million to fund 10 new positions in its office for the task force, including agents, attorneys and administrators.
"We are going to be able to tackle things like straw purchasing, gun trafficking and illegal transfer of firearms at even a greater scale. This, of course, as I said, expands on work that we've already done. But the difference here is that with expanding it and formalizing this work, we are bringing specialized expertise," Henry said.
"A hundred residents of Allegheny County died from gun violence homicides last year. Half basically were in the city of Pittsburgh. Half were in Allegheny County," Zappala said. "Some of the scope of what we're battling against — every year for the last 10 years, we've taken three tons of handguns off the streets and we've taken two tons of narcotics."
