SAGINAW, MI — A Saginaw woman who organized an anti-violence march has accepted a plea deal her felony gun case.
Sparkle N. Roby, 34, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, appeared before Saginaw County Chief Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson and pleaded no contest to single counts of felonious assault, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent.
In exchange, the prosecution agreed to dismiss three counts of felony firearm, a conviction that would mandate a minimum two-year prison sentence.
By pleading no contest as opposed to guilty, Roby did not admit to having committed any crimes. Jackson relied on court documents to enter convictions on the record.
During an October preliminary examination, an employee of Unique Styles Beauty Salon at 119 S. Jefferson Ave. testified she was working the afternoon of July 22 when she argued with Roby, who then left.
Roughly five minutes later, Roby returned, the witness said. Roby waved a gun by her waist, the witness said, demonstrating the gesture on the stand. Roby then left the business, the witness testified.
Prior to the incident, Roby on June 1 had organized the anti-violence Take a Step Walk in response to several shootings and two homicides that had occurred in Saginaw in a few weeks’ time.
Roby said Thursday she felt the plea agreement in her case was the best choice for handling the situation and for her family. She is free on bond and her sentencing date is pending.
