I would use what I know best.
Mitsubishi's world renowned rally car. The Lancer Evolution. Which I already own, and is knocking on the door of 500awhp. As far as lightening fast recon vehicle that seats 4 + gear and is AWD... Hard to beat. Ground clearance would definitely be an issue on wooded terrain, but I'm sure I could pillage some adjustable coil springs from some derelict rice bucket at some point. I still get 28mpg on the highway and she'll drink methanol / E85 / and probably anything short of diesel you can stuff in it. The ecu is flashable so I can adjust for whatever fuel that can be scavenged. It would need some reinforcement in the front and windows. I'd probably just yank the front end off and make my own front end / fender area out of tube steel and plate. And chain link over the windows.

They're not mine but a Unimog set up like one of these would be my first pick...

Since they will no longer need it I would "liberate" an Armored truck. Plenty of room in the back for all my supplies including several secured 55 Gal drums of fuel or a extra large capacity bladder which could be directly linked to the fuel line. That way there is no need to leave securtity of the truck as I make my way out of dodge and set up a base of operations in the southwest.

I'll follow you....that thing should clear any "road debris".....
I have a chevy tracker. It is definitely my BOV. It has a 2.0 4cyl with aggressive gearing, so it gets decent power and great fuel economy. These little trucks don't get much respect, but they are VERY capable from the factory off road.
