RE: night vision
WalMart sold Gen 1 night vision in the toys section under the name of "Spy Gear" for $30-$40. I checked their website to link it, and it looks like they don't sell it anymore.

RE: night vision
Very interested to see what folks can find in the way of ZPAW night vision. I've had an inkling for a while now to find a cheap monocular to add to my BOB, or even the manpurse, if it's small enough. Even if it's just something to help me peer down a pitch black alley or cave, without giving away my position.

RE: night vision
i would like gen 2, because ive heard gen 1 doesnt workwell without moonlight. right now im a little outpriced, but would like to get 2 sets of goggles of gen 2. also ATN is has a really great gen 2 scope converter, pops off in seconds.....would be great for night time defense.

RE: night vision
So far, in the way of bargain basement night optics, I've seen a few decent reviews of the Jakk Pacific 'Eyeclops 2.0' infra-red imaging goggles.

They look huge, and cant seem to find out what the battery size requirements are, but for $60 on Ebay, it just might beat squinting in the moonlight. If finances improve, I may pick up a set later this week to test. They wont be anything close to mil-spec, but my budget likes the idea of $60 vs. $250+.

RE: night vision
I wonder if we could just retrofit the NV from those into something smaller and lighter? Those are damn tempting because they are so cheap.

Gen III is where it's at. No more dependency on IR illumination.
Remember... firing off IR is like having a flashlight on in the dark.

Anyone using any kind of NV will be able to see your IR swath as far away as their NV is capable of picking it up. And you might look like a good way to stock up on spare parts and equipment.

I don't think the gen 1 stuff is worth it. Weight, battery life, and FOV on them is usually piss poor. You're still going to spend up to $800 on this shitty stuff. Gen II you can sneak into around $1200. And there ARE used Gen III PV series NV sets floating around on ebay from time to time going in that realm of $ too. Used, but... dude, it's military gen III. It's old, but, that s*it works. Like drive a car, fly a plane works.

Be careful, thats the 'series 1' version, which only gives vision to the left eye. Basically a huge NV monocular. Though, for the more tech savvy solder-slingers on here, one might be able to reconfigure the components.

Agreed, that has been the downside of IR illuminated NVGs to me for a while now. However, I wouldnt see one of these cheaper units being used full-time. Just bring it up to give a quick peek into an area.

If it's use my NV to see whats ahead, and tip off unfriendlies with their own NVGs, versus wandering in blind, I'll take my chances with NV.

As previously mentioned...

Gen III AN-PVS7 for around $1200. These go anywhere from $2700-4000. I will hopefully be able to get a set this way. Because $1200 is ridiculous, but a smokin' deal compared to spending $4k on the same damn thing.

RE: night vision
I posed what I got last year ( Vhttp://www.pazrt.com/forum/thread-christmas-haul ). For what they are they work good. The head gear is a little awkward. Batteries arent hard to come by for it either. I have used them on camping trips and looking for wildlife at night.
